I look for raw materials having various qualities important to the aesthetic I hope to bring to my work. Woodworkers speak of the "figure" of wood, a term which encompasses grain, burling, coloration, dimpling, pigment and a host of other qualities. I too look for the figure in wood but from a three dimensional perspective. My pieces range in size from miniature to massive, yet the process of working them is the same. As for finishes, some of my works are left completely natural. On others I may use vegetable or mineral oil, or beeswax or a combination of the two. I avoid varnishes and bright finishes. Sometimes, depending on the wood, my pieces try not to reveal the hand of the artist, as it were. Other works are highly chiseled.
